How to Cook Noodles or Pasta

Select the correct size pot for the amount of pasta you are cooking:

For every 1 lb of uncooked noodles you’ll need 4 quarts of water.

This information will help you choose the correct size pot for boiling the water.

Making pasta for Mac & Cheese Recipe (serves a crowd of 10):

Fill a large soup pot with 8 quarts of water (2 gal).  This is a big pot!

Bring the water to a boil first then

Add:

  • 1 Tbs. salt

Add noodles:

Once the water has started boiling, carefully add 2 lbs of noodles.

Use 1 lb. of whole-wheat noodles and 1 lb. of regular noodles

Stir the noodles into the water so they don’t stick together or to the bottom of the pot.

Bring the pot back to a boil and time the noodles.

The time will be different for different shapes of noodles. Check the package.   The noodles usually cook within 8-10 minutes.   Set the timer for the correct cooking time.

Once the timer goes off, turn off the heat:

Use a slotted spoon and take out a few noodles to make sure they’re cooked.  Be careful not to burn your mouth!

If you decide the noodles are done, pour the noodles into a colander. Shake the colander to drain all the water out of the noodles.

The noodles are now ready to mix with the cheese sauce for Mac & Cheese or red sauce…or sauce of any kind!.

Tips for cooking spaghetti:

If you’re cooking spaghetti for a crowd, toss the drained spaghetti with ¼ cup of olive oil so it doesn’t clump together. The olive oil tends to keep the sauce from sticking to the pasta, but when you’re cooking for a crowd, it’s your best option.

If you’re just cooking for the family, don’t toss the spaghetti with oil. Just drain it and toss with a little bit of the sauce, until you’re ready to serve.
